Where does the data come from?

From the official Met Office MIDAS (Meteorological Integrated Data Archive System) daily series, with records since 1873. Open Government Licence (OGL v3.0).

Why since 1873?

That is when the MIDAS archive begins at the earliest stations (Stornoway Airport). Coverage for most of England and Scotland goes back to the early 20th century.
